So, back to the post that I referenced that I would write on Thursday. When you meet new people, you’re always stuck talking about the same old things. So, where are you from? What’s your major? What do you plan to do with your major? Blah blah, boring stuff. Oh, if you’re from a place that they have heard of before, they might try to play the “Do you know…” game to see if by any small chance you happen to know the same people. I’m not a fan of that game- probably because I don’t know too many people and I hardly ever make connections. Then, the conversation will move into the favorite category. What’s your favorite movie? TV show? Song? Band? Etc.
I’m not a super fan of these questions. I usually tell people that I don’t do favorites, except for a very few. For instance, my favorite color is blue, and it’s because my eyes are blue and I think I have very pretty eyes (I’m not vain, I had no control over that, I just appreciate what I’ve been given). And I’ve recently realized that there are a couple reasons I don’t have favorites. For one, I’m pretty easy going and will enjoy most movies I see, I enjoy almost all types of music, etc. I’m not super opinionated about things I view or listen to (okay, I know that you’re all thinking, she’s not opinionated, yeah friggin’ right- but that’s not what I said. Of course I’m opinionated, but I usually don’t judge and over analyze movies and junk). So that’s one reason why I don’t have a whole lot of favorites. The second reason I don’t do favorites is just because I have a bad memory. If I do watch a movie that I think is AMAZING, I usually forget about it within a week. Then, once it’s mentioned, I’ll remember it’s my favorite, but in the between time, I’ve forgotten. A third possible reason that I don’t have too many favorites to talk about in that conversation, perhaps, is because people ask me about the wrong things.
This is what I came up with on Thursday while we were snorkeling. Most people won’t ask you what your favorite fish is (unless you’re at a seafood restaurant and they’re asking what you want to order), but I’ve actually got one of those. My favorite fish is the Humuhumunukunukuapua’a (the Hawaiian state fish). We’re so tight that I just call him Humu for short (oh, and because I can’t actually ever remember his full name).
So yeah, I’ve got to work on this whole remembering my favorites thing, and people also need to start asking me better favorite questions. Let’s go over the list they’re allowed to ask me: favorite color, favorite fish…. Okay, it is me that needs to work on it more.

You are my favorite sister who is a teacher. Ben is my favorite husband. Roman is my favorite Roman. That's how favorites work around here.
